TranzAlpine Honey

BioGro No. 450

From Mid Canterbury to the World

Since 1910, TranzAlpine Honey has been a family run-operation with Mid Canterbury roots. Today TranzAlpine Honey is the #1 certified organic honey producer in New Zealand. The award-winning company produces organic honey, harvested from remote locations in the Southern Alps.

They produce over 27 certified organic honey products, health supplements and remedies including 17 different kinds of premium organic honey and honey fusions, that are enjoyed in over 28 countries across 5 continents.

TranzAlpine Honey has been certified organic by BioGro since 1993 but has been producing honey organically since 1910. While technology has helped them streamline some of their processes, traditional beekeeping practices are still very much at the core of everything they do.

“We knew early on that the responsibility to our bees and the environment would be a lifelong commitment, and we take this just as seriously today as we did when we started beekeeping over 100 years ago.”

Organically certified honey is unique because, unlike other farming practices, bees cannot be entirely contained. This is why organic honey certification stipulates that the beehives are situated at least 3km away from urban pollution or any pesticides and chemicals from agricultural spraying.

“We need to be acutely aware of the activities of our neighbours and the environment surrounding the hives in order to maintain our certified status. Certification is just one of the ways we demonstrate our commitment to organic practices and alleviate potential consumer concerns around authenticity.”

The international market favours transparency and traceability around organic practices. Savvy consumers know that there is more to organic products than just labels and their preference for New Zealand products continues to grow.

The legislation and requirements for each country are different, with some markets presenting very complex and challenging requirements, so we ensure scrupulous checking of all requirements takes place frequently and thoroughly.

When anyone buys any TranzAlpine Honey product, they get complete peace of mind knowing that they have played their part in protecting the bees and natural pollinators so that we may all live in harmony for generations to come.

The TranzAlpine Honey Organic Legacy

“TranzAlpine Honey will continue to build our legacy through good old-fashioned New Zealand values with total transparency.

We are very proud of our values and commitment to delivering a 100% certified organic product that didn’t come at the expense of our natural pollinators or the carefully nurtured ecosystem they call home.

Bees are key for supporting healthy ecosystems and sustainable agriculture, elements that are the fundamentals of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

TranzAlpine Honey is constantly innovating and measuring our processes to find better ways to reduce our impact so that we can produce healthy food without compromising future generations' ability to do the same.

Diversity drives resilience and healthy ecosystems with greater biodiversity are stronger and more adaptable, with the ability to recover faster from adverse climate change events.

Certified organic farming practices have the power to decrease the adverse effects of global warming and have more synergy with the environment.”
