Summary of changes:

  1. Procedures about notifying to buyers in regards to noncompliant products must be included in grading procedures.
  2. Grading documents need to be kept for more than the length of the shelf life of the products.
  3. You will need to include your certification number (BioGro Number) under the JAS logo, from April 2018.

There have been various updates on the JAS law and therefore updates on various documents including technical criteria. Please note that an English translated version of the updated documents are not yet available from Japan MAFF.

We have summarised the major updates along with comments from the Accreditation Manager. The transition period is one year from the date of this notification.

However, this has changed to suit product type as some products (e.g. dried beans, preserved foods) may last more than one year and hence any relevant documents also needs to be kept more than one year.

VI. Property where certified to PPMD

  • If unavoidable contamination occurs on the property of PPMD, who is certified in accordance with Article 14. 2 or with article 19.3, in case the contamination is very small, the standard 1.1(1) will not be applicable and consider as a prohibited input was not utilized.

Comment from BioGro: The above is only applicable to the case where unexpected contamination is occurred (e.g. spray drift, some mistake in the input supplier’s document and therefore incorrect decision on approval of the use, natural disaster etc). The operation may not be penalized for his/her certification status such contamination is found very little, however, the products harvested from the contaminated property still may not be eligible for JAS organic.
