Plantae (BioGro No. 5418)
Plantae is a family business which produces a BioGro-certified organic range of skincare products made from New Zealand grown organic ingredients where possible. Based in Nelson, it was founded by Carol Priest and her three daughters Janelle, Fiona and Jacinta. With a New Zealand Certificate in Science & Chemistry and over 26 years’ experience making organic skin care products, Carol has been a long-time advocate for and pioneer of organics.
We apply the same organic principles to skincare as we do to our food. I have always been passionate about what my family eats and I have made sure that they, and others, know that whatever they put on their skin is absorbed into their bodies.
Some people have misconceptions about natural products. They think that by choosing natural they are doing the right thing for themselves and their family. They are unaware of the harmful chemical residues found in some natural products.
I remember a time when consumers didn’t need to think about choosing organic products because most producers didn’t use harmful, synthetic chemicals. But now many do. One of our biggest challenges is convincing people that natural just isn’t enough anymore. Educating people about organics has been a slow process, but more and more people are beginning to understand that natural and organic products are not always what they seem.
Choosing to buy certified organic products means a customer can be sure that they contain no nasty chemical residues.
In addition to that, the production of organic products is much better for the environment: no sprays pollute the air and no build-up of chemicals is found in the soils and water ways. Organic farming practices maintain and replenish the soil which creates a sustainable system of food and ingredients for suppliers.
Any business in New Zealand can legally state that their products are organic, even if they are not.
If consumers want to be sure, they need to choose certified organic skincare that contains certified organic ingredients.
Being independently certified by BioGro means our skincare products are devoid of nasty chemicals including phenoxyethanol, parabens, mineral oils, SLES, artificial colours and fragrances, propylene glycol, PEGs, EDTA, triethylsilane, isopropyl alcohol and formaldehydes. We don’t allow GMOs or animal testing.
As consumers are becoming better informed they are becoming more discerning. They have a genuine fear of chemicals used in skin care products and don’t trust where and how products are produced.
We chose to be certified by BioGro because of its commitment to upholding the highest standards. It has the most rigorous annual auditing process and because I stand behind my products 100% I don’t find it difficult to meet their standards.
Any organic producer that doesn’t have BioGro certification will be left behind because it is the premier organic certifier in New Zealand and has developed the most stringent standard for health and bodycare products.
All of our products are made in our purpose-built factory. After just 18 months since launching, we produce and distribute 12 products to 57 stores throughout New Zealand. Our domestic retail base is supported by steadily growing retail sales in Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the UK.
I am really proud to work with the most important people in my life - my daughters - every day. Together, we have ambitious plans for the future. We want people to think of Plantae as the world’s most true and desirable skincare brand.
